Saber Charger Help Needed...

Post by kb0nly »

The charger is a NTN4734A, anyone have schematics, troubleshooting info, anything on these?

I think this one has a problem but i have no idea what. I have a known good battery, tested and charged using my analyzer, now if i put it in the Saber charger it goes to the red charging light and stays on that. I left it in there for an hour and no change.

Also, if you remove the battery the red charging light stays on. You have to unplug the charger and plug it back in to get a respsonse out of it again. But, it cycles through and flashes all four lights and then all of them go off until you insert a battery. So the charger at least seems to be working somewhat. When you insert a battery it steps through each indicator and then goes to charging but for some reason gets stuck there until you power cycle it. And i don't think it's actually charging either.

Any common failures on these units that might be at fault?

4734 charger problems...

Post by Tom in D.C. »

My limited experience with these units has been that it is a rather
complicated piece of equipment, and unless you have the service
manual you're flying blind. I have a six-gang unit, which is just a
4734 X 6, on which one slot flashes red all the time when the slot
is unoccupied but otherwise works fine. I also have the manuals
for these units but honestly they're so complicated that if I had a
serious problem I'd probably chuck the unit and replace it.

If i could find the service manual, or a copy, then i could at least give it a go, and if i can't get anywhere with it then i will chuck it and move on.

At least there is some showing up on ebay if i end up needing a replacement.

Another throw away Motorola product huh? I would still like to see schematics for this charger if available.

The only problem turned out to be the fuse holder. The gray plastic piece with the voltages on it, 220, 240, and 115, was showing 115 through the window, but the metal contact was in the wrong position!

With the charger upside down and the front towards you so the voltage is readable right side up, the contacts should be towards the back when in the 115v position, mine was to the right which is the 220 volt position. And down is the 240 volt position. Since the contact clips into the gray plastic piece with the voltages on it there is a chance this problem can come up again, so i edited this post to better clarify the problem.

Also, inside on the back of the socket their is the black common on one contact of the socket, and the other side has the Blue, Brown, and Red wires to which the connection is selected by the fuse holder.

And if the fuse ever pops look in there for a spare fuse, mine has a spare fuse in there as well.
