Are you trying to convert from a non-DTMF front?

It's pretty simple to do in HexEditor. Go to: http://www.batlabs.com/visar.html and about halfway down the page is the procedure.

Before you bit bang look at the model specific page on the HT1000. It gives info. on using 'The Special Programming Mode' to enable DTMF. It tells you it only works on radios that came with this option from the factory but I can tell you using this method I've enabled over a dozen radios this way that started off as non-DTMF radios, worked evert time I tried it.

Not all of them will do that though. I have done many HT1000s with the Hexedit way. Takes 2 minutes to do, and poof... you have a nicely working DTMF pad.
