Spectra PL Problem

Post by MT »

Hi.

My friend and I both have a Spectra A7 Vhf
with mlm 5.23

And my friend have a problem with PL Decode.
it is set to std/std (mute/unmute) and everything
looks ok, but it doesn´t work.

No problem with my spectra.

His model is a X (secure model) and mine is a
non-secure..

I suspect his is a original A5 that is modified to
A7, but I cant confirm this..

Any thoughts???

What radios do you own?: Motorola, Icom, Sunair (HF).

One of our motorcycle troops came in with a nearly identical problem not too long ago. His radio would take something like fifteen full seconds to decode the PL tone and unmute, whereas any other radio would do it in milliseconds.

Turns out the problem was -- (drumroll) -- Leaking aluminum electrolytic capacitors on the RF and command boards. I did a rebuild, and all was well.

I swear... Those bloody caps have caused more problems than any other single component I know of in the Spectras.

Now, keep in mind there's no guarantee that's your problem (I can hardly inspect a radio I don't have), but it is a good place to start.

Happy hunting.

Hi Kc7gr.

Caps have been done, so I dont think thats the problem.

Is there any other functions that can cause this problem??

I read that if the radio is set up to handle data of any kind, that will disable the PL/DPL encode and decode. I don't know how or where you specify this, and there might be a "MoFlags" bit to play with too. A digital radio (such as Astro) would not need or use PL/DPL.

A good thing to check, and one that I didn't know about. Thanks!

I would add, though, that the Astro radios are perfectly capable of encoding and decoding PL, if the mode in question is programmed as analog/conventional.

Keep the peace(es).

Hi everyone..

Problem solved.. It turned out to as simple as
the HUB function was set to Enable (and Mic
is not grounded)..

But, thanks for your replies :)
