During transmit, the PTT popple gets an oxide buildup that causes erratic PTT closure and sounds like static during transmission.
Other causes on RX can becaused by loose interconnects on the IF board flex under the controller and on the four flex connections on the upper controller that connect to the VCO, and the controls top...reseat those, but better yet, spray them with a good electrical cleaner to remove any potential oxide buildup.
Aside from that, there should be no loose connections, but if you never had the radio apart, check the antenna contact point, that's a number one area of trouble on the genesis radios......they always go bad, look for a cold/broken solder connection, if everything else is good, that's probably where you are having the static sound on both TX and RX.
