Motorola Maratrac PL Programming

Post by HRN »

I have successfully programmed Motorola Radius and Maxtrac radios with a PL tone and have had no problems. However, I am having a problem getting a PL tone programmed into 2 maratracs. One is a UHF and one is a low band. On the Mode screen for the channels with PL tones, I have the TX set to TPL and the PL tone I need on the line below it. Is there anything else that is needed for the programming of that PL tone? When I go into the help screens, it doesn't give any help on the Private Line tones. When we transmit on that radio, we are receiving the signal in our other ambulances, however, we are not breaking squelch at our County Communications Center. So I am thinking it must be a problem with the way we are trying to program the PL tone. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What radios do you own?: Progreso soup can with CRT

PL tones...

On programmable radios, the deviation of the PL tone is
often adjustable. Check and see if such is the case in the software you're
using. You might have the deviation of the PL set too low. You would probably
find this adjustment in the service screens, often accessed via the F2 key.

My experience is all with GP300 and Saber radios but I think that it's safe
to generalize as I have above.

If those 2 radios were formerly set up for carrier squelch operation it may require that you check the PL deviation with a service monitor and then go through the TX alignment procedure to set proper PL level. Then check and reset total voice deviation level on the channel with the PL active.

If the radios were formerly set up for PL but the new PL tone is either extremely low or high in frequency compared to the former tone, you may also need to go through TX aligment to touch up the PL deviation level. A major change in the channel carrier frequency can also change the PL deviation enough to require adjustment.

The PL and DPL deviation is NOT adjustable in the Maratrac by RSS.

The only "adjustment" that does affect the PL or DPL deviation is the REF MOD that controls the deviation symetry at the low frequencies assoiated with the DPL. That control is a trim pot on the RF Board. You need a calibrated service monitor to measure the DPL waveform to make the REF DEV adjustment.

It would have to be way off 'kilter' to loose the PL dev.

I would first pull the RF board and check the connector that goes between the RF and Logic board. Wipe the connector pins down with a soft cloth, or tissue, contact cleaners are not recomended as the plating on the pins will corrode easaly.
