A Hirose is a type of connector... in Motorola terms, they normally carry RX/TX audio, PTT switch, and keyload data. For certain models (Saber, Jedi, XTS, etc.) you can buy a hirose adapter which plugs onto the radio's speaker mic connector and allows the connection of surveillance accessories (earpieces, etc.) and keyloaders.

The plug makes it easier to change accessories (no screws), and you can use the same parts on different radios. Also, you can keyload without having to unscrew the retention screw on the connector (even worse on a Saber), swap cables, then swap back and reconnect.
