Yamaha Rhino?

Post by mmckenna »

Has anyone installed any radio gear in a Yamaha Rhino UTV?

My brother in law just bought one, and it's sitting in my garage (yes, I have the keys, and yes, wifey and I took it for a spin). I need to install a VHF radio in it, along with an NMO mount 1/4 wave antenna.

I've got a pretty good idea of where and how to mount it. I'm just looking to see if anyone has done this before and what your experience was. Pictures would be great.

Search turned up nothing, but I'm probably using the wrong terms.

Thanks.

i don't have any pix but for an antennae on the atv that i did i used one of those white fiberglass marine antennaes, it only needs a 3/4" pipe thread to mount it and it don't need a ground plane and it was a 6db gain antennae and only cost $40. and it worked out great too because it was 6 feet long and it doubled as the mast for their orange spotting flag. i just went to home depot and got a 3/4" pipe flange and mounted that to the rack and put the antennae right on that. the one i used was white but it can be easily painted to match the atv. and the whole thing is fiberglass so you don't have to worry about an rf burn if you touch the antenna while transmitting and wet mud won't ground it out.

OK, thanks for that.

I actually did this about 2 weeks ago. We needed to mount some flood lights, so I got a piece of 3/16 diamond tread aluminum cut to sit inside the top of the roll cage. Bolted that down to the cage in the 4 corners.
NMO mount in the center with a 5/8's VHF Hi band whip for now, might have them try a 1/4 wave later and see how it goes. Ended up mounting 2 flood lights on the diamond plate also. Worked out pretty well, about 1/4 the price of the official Yamaha aluminum roof.
