Help: Strange MT2000 receive noise

Post by njscan »

Hey Guys
I have a puzzling problem with my UHF MT-2000 and I’m looking for some guidance. I have several channels programmed (receive only) for local PD / FD. On one PD channel, I’m experiencing a constant “growling” when the radio stops in scan mode. It sounds almost as if two PL tones were beating against each other. I’m told this is related to the particular PL being used and the radio’s IF. What is more puzzling is the specific conditions that must exist for this problem to occur.
1. The radio must be in scan mode, if I manually select the channel, and disable scan mode, it’s fine.
2. The signal must be fairly strong. If I’m a few miles from that town, where any noise exists on signal, the problem does not occur.
3. If I select that channel as the priority channel, the problem does not occur – it only occurs when it’s just a normal channel in that scan list.

I have a DOS copy of the ZIF tool, which I was told, could shift the IF and solve this problem. However, in reading the “readme file” that comes with this tool, it does not mention anything about any PL or IF related noise.

One more point that might be important; the radio was programmed with the Windows version software. I’m told that once you read and write using Windows version, DOS versions no longer work. If that were true, would ZIF Tool (DOS) still work?

What radios do you own?: XTS2500, XTS5000, and MTS2000

uh, last I checked there was no CPS for the MT2000. If you read an MT2000 with MTS20000 CPS, you'll get a "model not supported" error. Unless someone stuck an MTS2000 controller in your radio, it's an MTSX RSS programmable radio.

As far as you're noise issue. I've experienced it on an MT2000 and never tracked it down. Maybe it's a front end overload issue? I've also heard this on a VHF HT1000 rev D when in scan, similar issue..also can reproduce the noise by holding the MONITOR button down when a carrier is present...the noise alsmost rises from the silence of the carrier. wierd.

Latest MTS2000 CPS vers works fine on my MT2000. I know it's related to IF offset and certain PL's. Recall reading about it, just have to locate the info again.

are you using MTS2000 cps ver 2.00.01? When I read my MT2000 UHF and VHF, both factory radios...I get a model not supported error. How did you get that to work? the readme file says only MTS2000 radios are supported as does MOL.
