MTVA disassembly

I let the smoke out of my convertacom

after purchasing some power connectors that have an opposite pin out than the pinout on the batlab site( and applying an unfused 12 volts). I can't figure out how to disassemble the darn thing to make a repair attempt. Does the metal piece on the back come off first?

If your speaking of the "brain" of the MTVA, then you want to go for the 4 screws on the bottom and side of the unit where then your can access the printed board.

Perhaps my nomenclature is incorrect. Not sure that I would describe this as a brain. This convertacom has no visible screws on top, bottom, or sides. NTN5613A. convertacom for MT1000. Has the four soft buttons on the front along with a display. One side has PAC/RT on off switch along with the mic jack. The back side has a db25 connector for the speaker, two switches, antenna jack, and the misbehaving power connector. The radio slides almost completely into the unit from the front.

Had me stumped for a bit, but I found my manual..

with everything removed, and the mtva unlocked, place the mtva face down on a flat surface, with the connectors on top.

you will see two L shaped slots at the top corners, adjacent to the connectors. you will see two tabs along the short side of the L. using a 1/8" flathead, carefully pry these tabs inwards, away from the case to release the top and bottom halves.

I've done this with the Genesis MVA. It's a pain. Pray, pry and keep your fingertips out of the way.

I have two of these units in need of repair, are parts ( the inner electronics) readily available or repairable? I'll give a reasonable amount of $ for a service manual ( or copy ) so that i can repair these things.

I too made the mistake of following the incorrect pinout and now have a MTVA paperweight. Any suggestion on what specific component might be in need of replacement, or at least some general direction? I am capable of performing the repair, but not so great on diagnosis.

I never found the smoke. I have a box full of parts though. Rube was doing his thing when he designed it.
