2006 Ford F150 FX4 Trunk Mount Spectra Radio Install

Post by CyberSlicer »

Hi,
I recently bought a Ford F150 FX4 Supercab and am planning to install a trunk mount 110 watt Spectra under the rear seat and a roof mount antenna.
Has anyone here installed this model Spectra in one of these (2004 - 2007) Fords?
Is there anything in the way of installing the antenna in the center of the roof, like a rib or double layer?
Any hints on running the cables up to the control head and battery?
All help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Don

2004 Super-crew on this end, you have two choices for mounting the drawer:

1. Under the rear seat on the left side (easy, and simple but takes up floor space if you want to toss something in the back with the seats up).

2. Behind the back seat on the rear wall (a little more dificult than #1, but much neater looking when finished).

As for wiring to the battery, use the wire race on the driver's side (under the kick panels, the pop off easily) to run power to/from the engine compartment. There is a firewall plug on the drivers side above the brake and accelerator pedals that you can puch through.

Control cables for control head and mic can be pulled under the carpet up the center of the cab to the console. I'm not sure which console you have, but I have center console with no shifter, come right out after remove 4 nuts and cut a hole in the front of it for cables to come up through.

Hope this helps.

Yep. Dan's on the right track. I would advise to shy away from the behind-the-seat option... on the '07s, there are some clips that hold the rear seat in. They are an absolute *:o* to remove.

Can't tell you about the roof... all of the antennas on the one we're working on now are mounted on an ARE topper over the bed.

Thanks for the responses. I just received a shop manual that I ordered from Helm which should be some help in removing trim, etc.
I'll probably mount the antenna on the flat spot right over the dome light and run the cable down behind the trim panel by the windshield, then back under the door sill to the rear. I agree that under the seat is the best bet. Removing the seat back is a long process that could also damage it, requiring replacement parts at the very least according to the manual.
The FX4 has a full console and floor shift which limits control head placement. I'm thinking about velcro mounting it's bracket to the console just forward of the shifter.
I'll update this post when I finish.

Check out Havis. They've got a drop-in console which fits over the OEM stuff, keeps the floor shifter, and gives you like 16 inches of control head space. They look very nice in those trucks.

I haven't popped the cherry on mine yet (yeah I know  ), Right now side mounted on the toolbox for parking garage clearance, so I'm not sure about the roof support layout.

Havis is the way to go on the console. While I don't have the shifter in the console, I did use their drop in unit for the storage compartment to mount a faceplate with switches.

The back seat is two 10mm screws at the top of the center seatbelt retainer, the you and a couple of buddies remove the seat. One buddy presses down on the back seat while you and another buddy pysh the retaining clips back to disengage them. Then lift the back of the seat up and out of the way. As tvsjr said, it can be fun, especially by yourself.

For easy of mounting and such, there is plenty of room under the left side of the rear seat to include the transmission hump if you want.

Good luck on the install.
