MCX1000 Annoyance

Post by w4rez »

I have recently acquired a VHF MCX1000. No matter how I set this radio up, it emits a short beep from the speaker every time I key the mike. I originally thought this might have something to do with MDC1200/600 signaling but I checked and both of these options are disabled. This radio also has a crypto board in it, so is it possible that it's beeping at me to warn me that I'm transmitting in the clear when I key the mike? How do I get rid of this most annoying sound?

I've never worked with MCX1000 RSS before but most of them will identify it as "TX CLEAR TONE", or something similar to it.

Yeah I thought there should be something like that in the RSS too but if there is, I'm blind. I also have a UHF MCX1000 but it does not have this problem.

I have double checked to make sure that I did have MDC turned off and I even disabled all of the crypto options since I don't need them....same thing.

Anybody else got any ideas?

W4rez, Is your radio an ex Coast Guard marine VHF? I've got one that does exactly the same thing but never got around to trying to disable it. I agree that it is an indicator to the operator that the radio is in the clear and not encrypted.

The MCX1000 I have does it also. I was going to disable it, but changed my mind. I thought it was a good audible indicator the radio is transmitting, preventing dead-keyups. Kinda like the MDC alert tone, but not nearly as annoying.

Just my thought....

ANd yes, the radio I have has encryption also.

For you guys with the former Coast Guard MCX1000's, have you ever tried reading it with the special marine version RSS to see if it's got a setting that the regular version doesn't have?
