"dot" antenna code

Does the colored dot on an antenna for a portable correspond to some chart or plan?

There is a bit of variance in model and band. Which radio and which band you looking for ? The codes basically are to differentiate between similar looking antennas.

I recently purchased an antenna for one of my HTs on ebay, it was advertised as a VHF but it looks like a UHF and has a red dot on it. It seems to work OK on my VHF MT1000 with a PS mic, but I was just wondering if there was some rhyme or reason to the colored dots.

what model ht is it? if you are also using it on a mt1000 then i'm guessing it's a 750/1250/1550. if it's not a real motorola the color codes won't matter but if it is a motorola for the waris series they usually say vhf or uhf right on them if they are the ones that go to a point on top. the other type that comes with the waris radios that are vhf will have a black dot on the bottom of the threads. my waris owners manual don't list the antennaes under accessories.

PSM antenna's on many models are different than the one's that are used on the radio connectors. In the case of a PSM antenna many are shortened versions to allow use with the PSM without poking you're eye.
And like I mentioned coding is used to differentiate similar looking antennas, there's no absolute in the codings. Ex: Red is used for VHF, UHF and 800
in different models. I've seen Blue on VHF and 900. It all boils down to the radio series as to which coding was used, and on some PSM's the coding is completely different than the radio's antenna code as bandsplits are usually different on antenna's that have been shortened.
In your case the 3 elements you've provided will allow ID. Genesis series, VHF, PSM antenna. I'll break out my references when I get home and see if that one's listed.
To get you started Genesis radios in VHF (other than PSM antennas)
use 3 different colors
Yellow low split 136-150.8
Black 150.8 -162
Blue 162-174

OK, I've got the skinny. According to Motorola's sourcebook
PSM's NTN5050 and NTN5493 are for use only with UHF radios and antenna's for these PSM's are:

400-430 Yellow
440-470 Green
470-512 Purple
