What have I done now? (MTS2000)

Post by High_order1 »

......so, to recap: I buy a radio off here. I forget to ask what its' been programmed with. Unfortunately its' programmed with a version later than anything I have.

I manage to find an old copy of Lab.

Curiousity gets the best of me, and I decide to use my new radio as a learning tool.

I find I can pull the codeplug out, and I can read the S Record. I think I can even archive the plug and save the srec to disk. Haven't killed the radio yet.

I get braver and try blowing the archive and Srecs back into the radio. Still works.

So, I try altering some of the data in the plug, and writing it back to the radio.

Radio beeps, self tests, and displays UNPROGRAMMED. All modes. I so much as delete one personality or change a checkbox, beep! UNPROGRAMMED.

Frustrated, I put all this stuff away, and it dawns on me, if I can write an archived plug to it with lab, what happens in CPS?

Well, it can now read CPS. There's one minor burp about a DPL or something needing reset to be able to unpack, but otherwise, there's the same data I saw in Lab.

I try to write to the radio in CPS, the bottom says, 'seeing if archive can be written to radio', radio goes into test mode, about 30 seconds later the radio reverts back to the original programming (no beep) and there's nothing to tell me what's happened on the CPS screen.

Now what?

Try reading the radio with DOS RSS (not lab) and write that CP back to the unit. I have found CPS can have a problem with radios programmed with LAB . If I read/write with DOS 6.07 I don't seem to have that problem.

There have been several posts indicating CPS can often read pre-toolproof radios (firmware earlier than 5.42) but cannot write to them. If I recall, your radio is firmware version 5.14 or 5.41 or something like that, so that's what's happening.

All I know is that its' trying my patience.

I read / wrote it in 06.07. Worked fine. Then read it in CPS. Still ok. Wrote it back - 'radio wrote successfully'

So, I start loading in a bunch of changes. CPS allows me to save the plug, but when I try to write it, CPS says written ok, but radio says illegal mode tone, and unprogrammed.

Another time, it took part of the changes, and didn't like the rest.

Tomorrow, I'm going to try and make some changes using 06.07. If that works, I just guess I'll stick with the DOS machine.

Which is too bad, CPS looked to have some promise.

Thanks for the input,

You didn't mention this in your original post. If you were able to read/write in both 6.07 and CPS, why did you start messing with the LAB? You should be able to restore it to it's "working" state by programming in the packed archive or s-record you mentioned to saved.

I started out not being able to read it with any software I had.

I got the 'codeplug too new'.

I gave up trying to get the latest CPS via my legit route, and found lab.

While waiting for a codeplug to force in, I tried a read/write with lab, and then found I could read / sorta write in CPS.

That is, as long as I don't change *anything*. Minor change lobotomizes the radio.

It was suggested to just stay dos because of the age of the radio, but I found the same issue with 06.07 and rvn 02 lab, read/write ok long as no changes are made.

So, I'm thinking someone eventually will come off of a DOS - read codeplug for me to try jamming in there, and see if I can then read/make changes to the frequency and scan lists/write it back successfully.

Otherwise its' a boatanchor until I google 02.02.xx .....

Seriously, I have NEVER had this amount of trouble out of a radio before. I am pretty good at figuring things out, but I just don't know how to ask the right questions here without causing an issue.

Ah well, I'll beat this thing eventually.

What band is the radio? I may have a codeplug I can send.
