Maybe OT: Monitoring A Single Channel - MABAS

Post by henryg »

Hello. I am trying to get some new ideas on how to best monitor a single channel, MABAS, 154.265. Our Dispatch center has been missing mutual aid calls for my FD and I am trying to set up something better in one (or more) of our firehouses to monitor the channel. Tones activate the receiver, just like a pager. I am currently using a Veetronix tone alert receiver in one firehouse, but is there something better? I'm just trying to see what others are doing. Thanks. Henry

Wrong approach.

Dispatch's responsibility is to monitor any mutual aid network and dispatch appropriate units. Period. Install something like a FedSig Informer and instruct them to monitor it and dispatch as needed. If they fail to do that, write them up. Dispatching shouldn't be part of a firefighter's job (what if they're out of the station on a run when the MABAS box comes in, which dispatch misses?)

If you're not in a supervisory position, I suggest you have a long heart-to-heart with whomever is in charge of the dispatch center.
