Jedi Speaker/Microphones

Post by losangelescop »

Considering purchasing a PSM for my Jedi to go with my RSM as an 'interchange'. Looking at the actual older Jedi style PSM, not the square Saber style one. Couple of questions....
1 ) Do the antennas on the mic actually give better tx range, or is it rx range or both, and approx by how much in ideal conditions?
2 ) Will antennas from the Jedi radio fit onto the mic connector or are they a completely different product?
3 ) Will the PSM's work on UHF 450-480 MHz well, and do they make any antennas for this UHF range, I have only seen them in 403-470?
4 ) What is the model number of a Jedi PSM with a 24" straight cord
5 ) Are stubby or whip antennas better for these mics?
6 ) What are the two black and one red buttons on the side of a PSM, and why don't the RSM's have these?
7 ) Do both RSM's and PSM's have the earpiece jack on the microphone connector plug, regardless of model number?
8 ) What's the ideal price for a good condition new or used PSM compared to an RSM?

Thanks for answering ppl, I know it's a lot of questions for one topic, lol. 8)

Your questions have been discussed throughout the board. Use the search function and you'll find what you're looking for. Really, the info's there, I'm just too lazy to look it up for you or type it. 8)

just buy a RSM. the PSM's have been notorious for failure. they are lossy, easily damaged, and route RF right to your noggin.

think about it. you are adding an entire antenna system to the radio. so you are adding loss. not to mention, just one more thing you can break. if your life depends on your radio, do you really want to rely on a thin wire that if it fails, may not fail all the way... it might rx ok, and tx well when close to a tower, but when you hit that emg button while you are fighting for your life in the basement of some perp's house, do you want to worry if your aid call is received?

the board can correct me if i am wrong, but i have noticed a decrease in the number of PSM's available out there. Of course M will still make them for the high tier products and big customers, but they dont seem to push them as much as they used to.

I would agree with this to a very large extent. Although some agencies have them becuase the officer is relegated to a patrol unit with no mobile radio, and the antenna on the PSM actually would recieve better inside the car than one on someone hip inside the car as well. Remember we are talking a less than ideal situation to begin with that I don;t necessarilly agree with, but if I am not mistaken several large Midwestern agencies operate this way.

Also, the rounded JEDI Style PSM was plaugued with problems. The square ones were the more reliable of the two.

...and you can take the square ones apart to fix them
if/when necessary. The round ones you have to unplug
the housing and throw the old one away, or throw the cord
away. I've always wondered who thought up these
glued-together monsters; they're the absolute tops in
planned, in-your-face, obsolesence.
