can any on help me getting started with motorolla R1225

Post by haider »

hi,
This is my first time here and i am here on recommendation of quite a few friends of mine.
i am currently working for UN and situated at a remote location in Sudan. Here, we have been provided with three motorolla transceivers R1225. the problem is this that none of us here understands its proper functionality.
specifically speaking i am facing following problems.
1. we are given icom handsets (walkie talkies) for interpersonal communication. and these walkie talkies do not get tuned up with this motorola repeaters. is there any way to make them both work together.
2. the box which we recieved only contains one piece i.s the repeater main module. i wanted to ask that whether this thing comes with any accessories as well? (by accessories i mean the device through which to communicate, the one which has PTT button, base station microphone and monitor buttons. pardon my use of highly non technical language in this context cuz i am kind of novice in this field ).
3. Does this GR1225 works ONLY with motorolla radio sets or it can be configured to work with radios of other companies as well (icom for instance.)

i will be extremely grateful for any help given by u all.

looking forward for an early response.

In order for the GR1225 units to communicate with the Icom portables, both may need to be programmed in accordance with Sudanese radio laws. If the GR1225s are to be used to extend the range of the Icom portables(repeater mode) they will need to be sited correctly and have the appropriate antennas attached and duplexers used(may already be a part of the GR1225s). If the GR1225s are only to be used as base stations they still have to be sited correctly and have the proper antennas attached, and they must be provided with microphones(which have PTT as part of them).
Since your knowledge of radio communications systems appears to be limited, might I suggest that you contact someone in a technical position at UN headquarters to provide technical assistance and/or an installer who is familiar with Sudanese radio law and who can also program and install your equipment so that it performs satisfactorily for you.

Dear AI,
First of all a bundle of thanx to u for replying me and that too at such a grass root level so that i could understand the technicalities in a better way.
secondly, the basic intention IS to use the GR1225 as repeaters to extend the range of ICOM handsets.
now comes the part where Sudanese radio laws come into play, yeah its a bit tricky thing.
thirdly, please clarify that the programming of these two (ICOM and GR1225) can only be done by some technician? can't we do it ourselves ? )
cuz currently in Sudan there is a spell of heavy rains and all the road network is as good as a quagmire. (literally NO vehicle can mov on these roads ). and air sorties are few and far apart. while the job in which we are in requires to be in communication with each other via these sets.
i know i am pushing a bit too far. but really ur help will be a saviour.
thanx once again.

If you know what parameters are required to be used(here is knowledge of Sudan's radio regulations is important because they are the host country) and have the required programming hardware and software and knowledge of how to use the software there's no reason why you couldn't program the equipment yourself....assuming that Sudan allows this. You didn't mention antennas, so we have no way of knowing what was provided for your use. If your GR1225s are to be used as repeaters with single antennas per site they will also need to be equipped with duplexers which also may have to be tuned using the proper test equipment.
I think I understand your situation....the conditions will not allow technical service personnel to perform your installation at this time, and you need radio communications now...however if everything needs to work to your satisfaction the technical installation and programming needs to be done correctly.

some basics.connect antenna to the antenna connector on the unit.plug unit into power source.make sure both radio's are turned on.there is a repeater controller inside next to the radio's make sure the repeater enable button is enabled. the green light should be on.use one of youre icom portables and ptt you should see the cor light come on.if the icom has more than one channel try them all.chances are that the supplier has set up all the radio's to work together. good luck
