Multiple GR-1225 repeater setup

Post by leighf »

I'm trying to resolve dead-spots within our coverage area, using multiple repeaters.

The current setup is a single GR-1225 and 8 radios using the same TPL.

I would like to install a second repeater to provide coverage in the dead-spots but do not know/understand how to set it up whilst avoiding 'howling'.

I've read in this forum about 'transmitter steering' and 'voting systems', but don't know what I need.

Grateful if someone can point me in the right direction.

TIA

Well, you arent going to simulcast GR1225's. They arent really capable of that, for a lot of reasons we wont go into.

There's a lot of ways to look at your problem, and lots of ways to fix; are your coverage issues related talk out (portables having trouble recieiving) or talk back (portables not making it back to base)?

Ill be happy to give you some pointers, and some ideas, as will others here. But, please involve a local expert or radio shop. They will be famillar with whats in use in your area. The last thing you want is to tinker, and cause interference to a critical system that people's lives depend on, or damage your own gear.

That being said, I have a few suggestions that have worked for me if you send me some addtional info.

The simple way to avoid problems with 2 repeaters up at the same time would be to use different frequencies
for the different locations. Then simply tie the operation of both together. Lacking the additional channels,
the next best thing to do would be to have a common output tone (CTCSS) on both repeaters. Then use a
different tone on the input. This way you could selectively pick which repeater your going to key up.

Not many choices with equipment that won't support simulcast and the stability needed in frequency control.
