Newbie Question: TPL

Post by dean83 »

Hi!

I have a very basic understanding of radios and programming but am able to do some simple things like program channels, clone radios, expand channels from 2 to 16, etc.

However I am a bit lost when it comes to the squelch. I realize that squelch has something to do with radio specific calling but need some help.

I am programming 10 HT1000's VHF for a local ski hill I work at. The manager provided me with a VHF frequency with a TPL code of 74.4 hz.

My question: Is there a need for a TPL code on a simple closed radio system? Why would this code be in place?

Second question: We want to prevent local media from listening in to our channels, but of course, this is not 100% possible without some fancy equipment. Is there a way of programming the radios to use certian codes or tx/rx squelch to prevent outside radios from picking up our transmissions?

Thanks!!

1) The tpl is used so you don't here outside interference/ co channel users. If someone else were on your channel, but had a different pl, you wouldn't here them and they wouldn't here you. Now if someone had a scanner, or a radio programmed for carrier squelch rx, or a radio with pl, but in monitor mode. They will here your transmissions. PL tones do not give security, just tune out annoying neighbors.
2) No, see post 1
