Quantar Program Cable ?

Post by arlojanis »

I may need a Quantar programming cable soon. Can I build the cable? Do you have a drawing? Does the cable require a RIB?

It is a standard 9-pin null cable.

Yes, it is a standard RS-232 DB9 "null modem" cable, but you need a gender changer for the Quantar end.

(A straight through "serial" cable is DB9F on the DTE (computer) end and DB9M on the DCE (device) end, and pins 2, 3 and 5 are common on both ends. A "null modem cable has a DB9F on both ends, and pins 2 and 3 are crossed over. The Quantar functions as DCE, but its bulkhead connector is DB9M (DTE); I cannot for the life of me devine the logic behind this.)

Sounds like a Lap-Link cable and a gender changer will work.

So Motorola can sell overpriced programming cables, of course.
No trees were harmed in the posting of this message...however an extraordinarily large number of electrons were horribly inconvenienced.

Well, that reaction, while cynical, is exactly what one has been trained (by experience with Motorola) to give. But the fact of the matter is that the Quantar Maintenance Manual doesn't hype a proprietary cable, it just says to use a null modem cable. For some reason, it doesn't mention the need for a gender changer.
