Charge time with NTN4734A and NiMh battery?

Charge time with NTN4734A and NiMh battery?

Hi all, just bought a brand new 3rd party Saber battery. It's a NiMh-chemistry, 2700mAh rated high-capacity battery. My question is this: how long will it take to charge (to light the green light) using an original Motorola NTN4743A quick charger? So far it's been sitting in the charger for 70 minutes, and none of my other NiCd batteries exceeded 65 minutes before turning on the green light. Is something wrong with this battery, is there some kind of known issues with 3rd party batteries and the NTN4743A charger or does charging take longer for a higher capacity battery?

Your NiCD Saber batteries were probably 1800 mAh maximum, so the
2700 mAh battery has to take a lot longer to charge, so leave
it alone until it stops charging. The 4734 is okay to use with
the NiMH battery; we all do it and there are no problems. What
you can NOT use the 4734 with is a Lithium Ion battery.

Tom,
I'm with you about the LiIon batteries. An yes, the NiCd's were 1800mAh. What I can't figure out is why it would take two hours (yes, that's how long my NiMh has been sitting in the charger for at the moment) to charge a NiMh battery - unless the maximum charge output of the 4734 is about 1,9A (or thereabout). Basically, I'm afraid I'll destroy the battery or worse; my apartment in the subsequent fire... Any thoughts to still my anxiety?

Experience has taught us that the NiMH batteries only will
charge to about 90% or so on the first try. What we do is
to take them off charge, let them cool off, and then put them
back to try to top them off. It usually works. Personally I got
pretty tired after years of guesstimating battery condition so
I got an Impres charger and readout and now I run mostly
Impres batteries. The readout tells me capacity, voltage, etc.
and how long the charge cycle will take. The Impres stuff is
light years ahead of guesstimating and well worth the money
to set it up. And Impres batteries are available for Sabers, too,
even though Sabers are long gone as a current item. Once you
get into Impres you're spoiled for anything else. While you can't
do it on a Saber, you CAN read battery condition on an XTS5K
which is really nice.

On a funny note, I had one nimh battery that my impres charger would not charge everytime, but the 4743 would do it just fine. Yes, it might take awhile to charge it, but 2700mah should last awhile too.


Just think what it would take in a porta pocket to charge a 2700mah? :lol:

Sorry to be thick skulled, but have any of you guys any idea if my theory about the max output ampere of the 4374 has any merit? I've been told that fast-charging a battery should be done for one hour at the number of ampere that the battery is rated for; i.e a 1800mAh battery should be charged at 1,8A for one hour. According to this it should mean that the output needed to charge the NiMh battery in one hour should amount to 2,7A.
Bottom line (according to my meager electrical knowledge): either the charger is incapable of providing 2,7A and hence charging will take longer, or something else is in play that I don't know about (for instance if a NiMh battery behaves any differently from a NiCd ditto)
