troubled W3 XTL5000

Hello all,

I have recently purchased an XTL5000 in W3 configuration. I have plugged it into a power source and when I attempt to turn it on the screen turns on very dull (however it shows no self test mode). sometimes the lights will come on, other times they won't. Usually the times when the lights come on the radio will stay with a low contrast screen with icons and dot matrix showing and then beep once several seconds after as if to say it has booted up........

Question is, is it the control head or the radio? And if anyone has experienced this problem before what it the best/ cheapest way to fix the head or radio.
