need squelch trouble shooting tips

Does anyone know of a good reference source where I can find some squelch trouble shooting tips? I have a squelch that is not working, it is off a Ramsey FX-50 that I build when I was like 16. I pulled the radio ofcoarse the manual is lost! and I would like to fix the squelch just to have the rig working. I didnt know if anyone had and quick tips.

Considering that the Ramsey FX-50 user manual is the first link that comes up on a Google search, and also that it's not a Motorola product so it's pretty much off topic...
