Why does our PM1500 sound diff from our PM400?

Post by dbfd588 »

We have PM400's in our Expedions but our Main Rescue has a PM1500. It sounds different form the other radios. It has a nice crisp sound to it. It definetly sounds different. We arent P25 yet. Just regular freqs and PL tones. But still it sound really cool. Just wandered what made it sound diff. Also the Jail Admin at the local SO sound sweet when he talks on his radio. Defintly diff form the others. I think he mave mave tuned on the mic gain maybe. But thats another story. Just wandering why our PM1500 sound diff from our PM400. Also if I have Expand enabled on a mobile will the other recieving end notice a diff and if so, how? Will if sound muffled or distorted or nice and crisp. Thanks

The PM1500 is a digital-capable radio, so all the audio processing (and most of the front end) is done in DSP. The PM400 is an older, analog-only radio, and thus is likely not DSP.

Compare the audio of an analog Spectra and an ASTRO Spectra on an analog channel...

Ah ok that makes sense. I knew they were P25 capable and our 400's arent. They sound better I think. A pm400 sounds good but the 1500 has a distinct sound. Will a Astro Spectra sound like a PM1500? Id like to achieve the sound. But I hate to fork out that much for a PM1500 that I wouldnt even use 50% of its capacity.
