KEYLOADER "UPGRADED TO DX" wont load as3

Post by wazzzzzzzzup »

recently i purchased a DESXL CX securenet keyloader from a booth at a recent hamfest. he indicated it had been upgraded to the DX firmware. i set up a key in location 0 and proceeded to load the key, the loader thinks for a moment then says FAIL. but it does load my old MX just fine. when i power on the keyloader it says "ASN" is there a special mode or trick to get it to load a AS3?

I have found that a DX will not load an MX, at least mine won't. Now I know there about a dozen different flavors of key loaders out there. You may have to open the key loader and look at the firmware chips and their part numbers to determine what level it has been updated to. Another thing you may want to check and see what hybrid is in the key loader. It may have a DES or DVP in it, and it will not work if you trying to load an XL variant.

ok, i opened it up, the hybrid is a TRN9844C and the Eeprom is copyright 1990 TVN6087A (it is a TD27C256 Eeprom)
theres also a smaller 8 pin IC in a socket near the larger EEprom, it says X24C16PT 043ES

is there a way to put the loader in a test mode to display firmware revision?

That sounds like real old firmware unless someone over wrote the 27C256 and left the old label on which I doubt.

If you had a prom reader you could confirm what firmware your 27C256 has in it, the correct checksum for the DX is B755.

I have two DX KVL's and both have the same checksum but no TVN number on the 27C256's.

more info, the TRN9844C is the same HYBRID part number that is in my AX KVL's.

All of my CX KVL's use a HYBRID with the part number of TRN7036A.

If your back cover has the Model number T3011CX marked on it then it appears that some one put a CX back cover on an AX KVL and sold it to you.

Check and see if your processor board has a bar code label on it with the part number TRN9842B or something similar, if so then yours is an AX KVL.

Also if your KVL has a PWB with a marking of 84D84688RXX with some revision number, XX, then it is a AX KVL.

The CX PWB should have a bar code label marked TRN7136B39 or similar and the correct PWB marking is 84D84440T02 or similar.

And some more info

I just found my T3011 BX KVL and it has the same internal numbers that your KVL has plus it has a 24C16 EEPROM, the AX has a smaller EEPROM in it so yours is probably not an AX rev T3011.

I'm thinking now that yours is a T3011BX KVL as the hybrid in my BX is also a TRN9844, BTW the PWB stamp is an 84D83255R01 on the BX and it also has the numberTRN9842 stamped on it so if your is the same or similar then you can pretty much conclude that yours is a BX rev.

And most important of all is that the T3011BX displays ASN when turned on, the DX does not display ASN when turned on so it looks like yours is probably a BX model with a CX back cover placed on it to get a few bucks more from your pocket book.

Maybe this info should go into a sticky thread at the top somewhere if it's not already there.

This has to be enough info to either help you out or totally overload your brain, probably the later.

I'll try to crack mine open tonight, but mine is a BX to DX or CX to DX...I'd have to look.

Either way, it sucessfully loads DES keys (and its varients) from an X9000 to XTL5000. I believe my loader came from a board member a few years ago that had the supply of "upgrade" chips.

You didn't mention that the xtl loaded fine, then your AS3 KVL cable has to be bad

The post you are referring to wasn't from the original author. It was from a member saying he is going to look at his upgraded loader to try to help out.

My rear cover is showing 3011AX.

Internal part numbers that I find:

TRN9897A - Bottom of the frame
TRN9844C - Hybrid module
TVN6140A - Custom P-Touch sticker on the firmware
84D83255R01 - Red circuit board
13801X - Random yellow barcode on the circuit board
13803M - Random yellow barcode on the display circuit board

And after reassembling the KVL, it still has my keys loaded in it. Interesting.

Yeah, the designers of the T3011 KVLs didn't worry about tamper resistance at all. They probably followed the principle that if someone has physical access to the hardware, the game's up anyway.

As "secure" as some of these radios are, you have to wonder about the non-USGOVT secure radios. I have swapped out modules, radio parts and at times other software dumps, but if infinate key retention is enabled....it stays. I don't know how many times that I have NOT had to rekey ASTRO Spectra's. I do know I have only had to key them 2 or 3 times at the most...if that.

Jason

thanks for clearing that up, the flu and computers don't go together well. I thought the thread had changed a bit.

When I got all 4 of my KVL's they had no back covers on any of them, I had to sorth thru the internal modules to get the correct stickers on them.

it appears its just a BX loader, but have been told it is upgradeable by replacing the main eeprom, as the small serial eeprom should be current.
does anyone have a DX eeprom for sale?
