setup RAD fps-8 and sps-3s to ptp links for Astro voting

Post by celltech25 »

Can anyone help with setting up this equipment,

I believe i have the RAD boxes configured properly I can ping between the 2 rad boxes and that works with 2 ms delay

I am trying to estabilish v.24 links

I have port 2 of my astrotac comparator set to microwave v.24 link external transmit clock
I have my astrotac receiver set to v.24 link external transmit clock

I come out of the astrotac receiver via the rj45 to the sps-3s db25 input i come out of the sps-3s to the ptp links Lan input out the ptp to the other ptp out of the 2nd ptp lan jack to the fps-8 ethernet link i get a link light on both ends and can ping through the ptp link to both units, i then go from db25 to rj45 to the comparator on port 2 and do not get a v.24 link

Any ideas

I have contacted Rad they remoted into the fps-8 and sps-3s and said the units are tlaking and appear to be configured properly

Without getting into the specific equipment (because I have no working knowledge of it. :) ), and breaking it down to the nuts and bolts.... You're trying to run an ASYNC serial circuit (V.24) between between two devices, using other equipment as a go between. Seems like the timing would have to come from one of the devices directly involved with the V.24 circuit (one the DTE, one the DCE), regardless of the other equipment used to carry the signal from A to B. Try setting one device or the other (comparator or receiver) for an internal clock to provide timing for the V.24 circuit between the two. If I completely missed the boat, then I apologize in advance!

I'm not real familiar with either of those RAD devices, but from a quick google search, it doesn't seem that the SPS-3S is compatible with synchronous serial. The info I found on the SPS-3S only mentions asynchronous V.24 capabilities. The V.24 Astro data is synchronous, not asynchronous.

By having the comparator and and receiver set to "external transmit clock", they should be expecting to see the RAD unit generate a 9600 Hz clock signal. Do you have a scope where you can check and see if the RAD units are actually doing this?

Same thing with the FPS-8. I took a quick look on the web, and I don't see any mention of synchronous V.24 support. They only seem to support asynchronous V.24.

I've had success using the Juniper CTP1002 to convert the Astro V.24 to ethernet:

There may be other devices that work as well, but the CTP1002 is the only one I've personally worked with.

Thanks for the input Guys, I was finally able today to get these units talking the astro products are set to external cloack as the sps3s and fps8 both provide a 9.6kpbs clock output if they have software version 5.244 or higher so as of now everything is synced up and working in the shop now time to move it to the field

Maybe they do support synchronous serial, then... Glad it worked for you!

So just so I understand your setup, you have the FPS-8 at the comparator end, and the SPS-3S at the receiver end?

Roughly how much did those units cost?

Also, in the comparator CPS, I'd be curious what the link delays are when running through this setup. I don't have the CPS in front of me at the moment, but I think theres a screen called "Status Panel" or something similar that has a button you can click on to get the current measured link delay values.

undure on cost as these came from motorola and i was just tasked with configuring them

Right now there is almost no link delay because the ptp links are sitting across the room from each other currently when we get it mounted on the towers and operational i will let you know what the delays are
