"Pro Series" - PassPort AND MDC ?

Post by RadShop »

Looking for some options here....

Customer wants their existing equipment to be able to do this... Not sure it's possible, haven't found a solution in the last week that won't cost them some more cash....

Basically it goes like this: When one of their guys goes into an area where they need "quiet" , they want to hit a key and have the radio be alerted via MDC Sel-Call, Call Alert, or even two-tone paging.

Is it possible to do MDC over Passport?

Passport has it's own protocol for ID #'s, Alias', Call Alert, Select Call--need an upgraded Trident Controller for that one. You can not use Motorola MDC while in a Passport Zone. But most the functions that are capable are in fact similar.....just remember a Passport ID and a MDC ID are entirely different and are not compatible between radios either.

None of the Motorola Passport boards can be programmed for 2-tone paging..... You can program a Conventional Zone into a Passport capable radio that has a 2-tone page quick call assigned to it...but you will have to manualy select that zone thus disabling Passport all together, while on that channel.

I heard rumor that the new Mototrbo Handhelds will in fact be capable of scanning Passport channels while in Conventional or LTR mode....this is currently not possible with the units I've seen with those new option boards installed in them though.

I suggest you give EF Johnson a call and ask if they have a beta PP board that might do it for the radio in question.

I can also confirm that the new Mototrbo Handheld Passport option boards that Motorola sells do not have 2-tone in Passport either.

You cannot do MDC and Passport at the same time.

Which is what Motorola says... BUT

We successfully had MDC IDs working over Passport depending on which firmware revision was in the radio. This only worked on portables, the mobiles had it blanked out entirely, hence why I posted the question.
