220 volt GP 68 charger modification?

Post by KB8VSG »

I have a GP 68 with the 220 Volt charger. If I just switched the plugs to one that will fit in a US outlet wiil the charger still charge my battery. If not, has anybody come up with a modification yet?

Depends on how the charger/wall wart was built. It is not common in two way stuff to find a dual voltage wall wart/power supply like many computer peripherals have these days, but check the label on yours to be sure. All you need is a visit to Radio Shack and the purchase of the correct 117VAC wall wart with proper current rating and connector plug.

These knock off chargers have a built-in 220 volt ac transformer with a center tapped secondary with two diodes. I did try removing the two diodes and put a full wave diode pack, four diodes, using the full secondary. It is still a slow charger tho.

My charger has a normal plug to it wired direct. The plug is marked 220v but is identical to standard plugs only less than an 1/8 of an inch short. I wondered if I just clipped that plug and placed a normal plug if it would work only slower. Any ideas. The full wave pack and diodes are a little above me without complete instructions (and maybe even illustrations, I am a guy).

Any photos of your charger?

The ones seen here have a regular two prong 110 volt plug and two conductor flat, zip, cord.

GP68's were supplied with standard or rapid rate and are merely SP50 chargers with a push in adapter. All the bases are the same, the voltage determining part of the equation is the wall wart. Like Tom mentioned RatShack or the like should be able to supply a 12vdc cube. (These are not what Motorola calls World Chargers that have switching supplies and run on 90-270v
where the applicable cord (3 offered) will allow the base to operate worldwide).
