Open MTS2000 Case

Post by asmitty0010 »

I have some dust underneath the top display of my MTS2000 Model I. Just wondering if it's hard to open up the radio case or if I need a tool from MOTO. If I get it open would I be able to clean under the clear plastic screen cover or is the screen and plastic one unit?

What radios do you own?: XTS2500, XTS5000, and MTS2000

the radio can be opened with a small flat blade screwdriver used with care. Remove the antenna and battery, then pull straight up on the knobs and remove them from the shafts. On the rear chassis just below the bar code label is a small slot in the metal chassis where you insert your screwdriver (or opening tool). gently pry downward which forces the thin inner wall of the chassis free from the base of the radio. Then gently work the chassis loose from the housing, BE CAREFUL, as the front cover flex is still connected so don't yank it out or you may damage or destroy the flex.

Unplug the front cover flex from the controller. To clean the inside of the display lens, you must remove the display board to get at it. Everything is soldered to the flex, so be careful when handling it. You can then clean the display lens, display itself, and inside as well. The display board sits against the housing and has two tabs that go into the front on the opposite side of the "MOTOROLA" name plate. Sometimes they get stuck to the adhesive of the nameplate itself so you have to GENTLY work it free...use care as the small flexible circuit connecting the LCD to the little display board is fragile and rough handling can damage it easily.

There is a tool for opening a Jedi chassis, I have one, looks like a "reverse Doritos clip" if you will. It is plastic and is much easier on the plastic housing which can easily be damaged by screwdrivers or metal tools, and older style housing as prone to breaking from being opened up too much.

hope this helps.
