MTS2000 - programming problem

Post by cwolf520 »

I am working on a MTS2000 Model H01KDD9PW1BN and was trying to get rids of the "KYFAIL" beep from beeping. Well, I may have done something wrong while trying to fix the beep. Now the radio stays on all the time even when the volume control is in the "off'" position. I can remove the battery, turn the radio off, put the battery back in and the radio is off until I turn it on. After that, the radio will stay on until I remove the battery. Is there something in the program that keeps the on/off switch from functioning as a on/OFF switch?

I am using CPS 1.09 in Windows 95 format with a true RIB box, MOTOROLA cables and have been sucessful in reading and writing to this radio.

The problem with the on/off switch may have been there before I started messing with the codeplug.

No, I did not save the orignal copy of the code plug. I should know better!

Also, how do I get the KYFAIL beep and error message to stop flashing. The Detective that uses the radio does not like it and none of the channels are of SECURED that I can find.

Thanks for your consideration in this matter.

I'd try a newer version of CPS, latest MTS2K CPS is R02.03
I'd use a newer machine with Win2000/XP. Win95/98 is known to be problematic with newer CPS, in fact most CPS isn't supported in 95/98.
Your on/off/vol pot sounds like a dud. I'd try swapping the front shield assembly with one from another Jedi series radio and see if the problem goes away.

As stated, your on/off switch is defective, and needs replacement.

In the secure configuration, under the GENERAL tab, do you have: 'periodic keyfail tone' enabled?

If so, uncheck the box as this will rid you of the tone you hear.
That is a warning to indicate there is no valid key loaded in your secure module.

Module may be present, but without a key loaded, so when you change to secure operation, it's letting you know it will not work.

As for the on/volume pot, I have several of these, let me know if you can't obtain one locally, and I'll be happy to help.

Thanks all for the assistance. As for the "Periodic Keyfail Alert Tone" function, I had that unchecked and at powerup, it still beeps with the KYFAIL message.

I have plenty of spare JEDI parts and will gather a spare pot.

As for the CPS, I will get that.

Thanks again.

Are you using secure in the radio? If not, un-check the "secure equipped" box in the secure tab of the CPS and then it won't beep anymore for sure ..

Stupidity creates job security!

If your radio has old firmware, programming it with the latest CPS will not add any new features unless you have the latest firmware to match..

CPS = Customer Programming Software, Not CPS Software.

If they are using SECURE mode, they are asking me to keep the radio from beeping. I have unchecked the periodic thingy on the general tab. Waiting on the CPS and time to install the pot. I will update when I have everything up and running. I love my JOB!

If their using secure mode then you will need to have keys loaded to stop the KEYFAIL beep.

So to stop the KEYFAIL beeping just load in a key and it won't beep anymore, otherwise if you don't use secure then do like Mfire39 says and disable secure.

Well, I have replaced the switch from another MTS2000 guts, I mean radio and the results are the same. With the power switch off, I insert the battery and the radio is still off. When I turn the power switch on, the radio turns on and is operational. Power output is over 6 watts, receive is a little high at 0.89 uV on 153.755 MHz. I turn the unit off, and the display is still on and I can transmit with the unit. Something has latched the unit on.

I got the latest CPS 2.03. Now I am able to read and write to the radio. That is one step forward!

Model number of the MTS2000 is H01KDD9PW1BN with a serial number of 432AXL1234 which says June of 97 (even in on the labels inside the unit).

Version information has Codeplug as 000A and Firmware as 05.62 with a System Package of H35 and FLASHcode of 000001-00000-9.

I am now using an XP machine wth a real /\/\otorola RIB and real cables going into the serial port (NO USB).

I don't know what I did, but the unit powers off now. I took the data operated squelch (DOS) off.

At least I don't have to pronounce the radio. I changed the tx/rx board to see if I can get a better receive sensitivity. 0.89uV is not that bad, but I have seen it in the 0.16 uV range. With the TX/RX board from another unit, I get the same sensitivity.

I did something else and disabled the SECURE tab. Now the initial beep and kyfail message is gone.

Thanks for all who helped.
