Ok guys, so somebody educate me PLEASE.
I understand that the Spectra radios (I'm going to focus this conversation on VHF units, but I'm assuming this applies to the rest) can operate 136-174, but have two separate band splits. And I know that to know what bandsplit a radio is on, you need to read it via RSS. So my question is this - is the difference software/programming only, or do the different splits have different hardware components? What I'm getting at is - can they be moved, and is it just programming? I see a lot of 146-174 spectras out there, and I want to run down 144-148mhz. Do I need to hold out for a 136mhz unit, or what's the deal. I dont want to get into a bunch of modification (outside of simple stuff) to slide them down into the 2 meter band - can you guide me here?
Trying to educate myself. Lots of 146mhz radios around I keep letting pass me by, wondering if I should.

The band splits are not absolute. Every 146-174 MHz VHF range 2 split I have ever seen will do the entire HAM FM 2 meter band without any hardware modifications. Yes, the hardware is different between a range 1 and range 2 VHF.

Re: Spectra Band Splits
Spectra VHF Range 1 136-162 MHz
Spectra VHF Range 2 146-174 MHz
Yes the VHF Range 2 will do 143 - 174 MHz just fine.
