Our VFD has multiple System Sabers and Sabers in what I suppose is the 136-150 split. I took them into our radio shop and they were (obviously) unable to program a freq. of 169.400. I'm wondering what type of modifications would have to be made to the radio or in the RSS in order for the radio to accept frequencies that high.
Thanks a lot.

Re: Systems Saber and Saber Out of Band Programming
Even if you could do something with the RSS to accept those freq's, you're trying to go 20 MHZ higher than the hardware allows. The radio would be deaf, if it worked at all. Saber radios use plug in modules, & you'd have to swap them out for the correct split to work correctly. While you could go a few MHZ either way out of the bandsplit without a problem, 20 MHZ is just too much to ask. Years ago I had a similar problem. I purchased what was supposed to be a 440-470 System Saber. Well it turned out to be a 470-512 radio, with a 440-470 VCO board. While it worked, it didn't work as well as my friend's radio which had the correct modules. I found a friend who had a 440-470 radio that he was using in the 468 MHZ area. We swapped RF modules, & my radio worked fine after a complete realignment. His radio also worked fine in the 468 area with the 470-512 modules. You need to do the same thing, but with VHF modules of the correct bandsplit. Good luck. GARY N4KVE

you will need the correct modules for that high of a split. Here is a wealth of info on sabers..http://www.repeater-builder.com/motorol ... index.html

Re: Systems Saber and Saber Out of Band Programming
Before you run off in eight different directions try this. Program the Sabers as H33 rather than H43 radios. That should open up the bandsplit to a full 136-174 mHz. If it doesn't work then you can take other steps but it's worth a try to start with. The documentation for this step is at http://www.batlabs.com, go to Model Specific Information, then to Portables, and last to Saber I, II, III and then go down the page until you reach the statements about this modification. I don't know if this mod works with System Sabers or not. Even though you've programmed the radios as low power they will retain their high power capability.

Alright. Thank you. I'll give what you suggested a try, Tom.
