What kind of signaling data is this?

Post by motorolo »

So I was listening to some of the local public transit channels the other day, and I noticed that I kept hearing a form of signaling that I'd never really heard before. It sounds sort of like MDC, but different enough that I'm pretty sure that's not what it is. It sounds like there are two distinct types of data bursts one that's more percussive, and one that's more tonal, like MDC is. Rather than try to describe them, I've uploaded an audio sample of a few transmissions:

The vast majority of the radios in the bus fleet are motorola, and the mic / speaker interface looks like a phone handset. Some of the radios seem to emit the data burst on PTT, others do not. Not sure what other info I could include about the system that might be useful. Would love to know what this data is!

That's GE-STAR signaling. It was available as an option on some Motos, the MTS come to mind.
The bandsplit is only a suggestion.

Interesting. No way to decode it on my XTS, I presume? Are there any software programs out there that will decode GE-STAR?

The one that sounds like a pig squealing is GE-STAR, the other one sounds like some weird proprietary FSK...
