What computer....

Post by K1LNX »

....should I procure? I've got a VHF Maxtrac that needs programming and the version I of RSS I have says "RVN-4019H" on the diskettes (3.5 inch floppies). Everything I have is either a Mac, or running an Intel Atom chip, and none have serial ports :o

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I want to make sure I get something that will work.

Also, are 3rd party RIB's ok to use with these radios? Such as this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/RIB-Radio-Interface ... 56401ea0bf

I don't have any experience with Moto, so any help appreciated :)

Just about anything like a 386 running DOS and a serial port will work.

Most of the after market RIB units will work. You can make your own cables.

If you ask around, poke around and see if one of your family have an old computer resting in the garage. Stop by
some of the older computer stores and they will probably give an old computer to you.

What radios do you own?: Spectra, Maxtracs, MT2k, GP300

I've got a Compaq LTE Elite 4/40CX laptop that's running a 40MHz 486DX/2 and 20MB RAM. It has a TFT LCD which is a plus, considering most laptops of this era had slow response passive-matrix displays. Picked it up at a hamfest for cheap and it has never given a problem while reading and writing any radio I own. Unfortunately the floppy drive crapped out so I have to move files with a null modem cable, but since I hardly ever have to unless I'm loading a new RSS or something it isn't too bothersome.
