Astro Spectra missing something important

Post by KE7JFF »

So I picked up an "AS IS" special on eBay for a UHF Astro Spectra for $75.00. While I knew there was a slight chance it would be missing something, I didn't expect it missing the Vocon Board on the inside.

So now I need to figure out the best route to get a Vocon board in there. Should I find a UHF Fed split Astro Spectra and rob it for parts? Or does someone else have a better idea?

What radios do you own?: More than I can count

There are very few Fed radios floating around any more, since 911 they crush most of them. I too saw that the radios were missing the VOCON's. I always thought it interesting that the E-bay dealers never say so, claiming they didn't know what was wrong with the radio or such. The again had all the right information for the ones that worked. I havn't looked at the possibility of just replacing the command board with an analog Spectra's. That could be an option to at least getting the radio to work.

You can replace the command board with a Spectra cmd bd. You also have to change the RF board and of course the control head.

You can use any Astro Spectra VOCON and change the codeplug to the proper range.

I bought one of those from, presumably, the same scumbag. I complained and forced him to refund my money in full... he never sent the money to pay for return shipping, so I kept the radio for parts.

We wouldn't happen to be talking about an individual calling himself "trumpsurplus" on a certain popular auction site, would we?

Agree 100% with finding a donor radio to rob a VOCON from, but not necessarily with the lack of supply. There seems to be a glut of 800 MHz stuff coming out of the SE, and most of what I've seen had 1 Meg VOCONs.

Nope, this was not trumpsurplus....this was a user named buyhitek out of Milton-Freewater, Oregon. One of the reasons I picked this seller was the fact that UPS delivers from that side of the state to my side pretty much overnight on just plain UPS Ground.

Anyways, I might have a lead on a vocon board from a donor radio.

I almost bought one from them, but he said it had no tags so he didn't know the freq. Well it is good to know so mo one else gets ripped off.

Wow even if it wasn't the trump guy, you should definitely watch out for items from him:

Anyone buy from seller 'STATES' has had a bunch of Astro Spectras for a while. Non digital radios but needing to upgrade my Spectra's to get 12.5 spacing with 2.5 Kc splinter capability, seem to fit the bill if they're complete.

I just bought one actually; its still enroute but looks like a few other people bought them with good reviews.

He's legit; a friend of mine talked to him about a bulk order and got the scoop. All of his stuff is Alaska State Police surplus; no pulled VOCONs or any of that.

FYI Trump Surplus is now basesurplus on eBay. Probably the rudest guy I've ever dealt with on eBay...
