Quantar Conversion, Datatac DSS-III to Analog Voice

Post by deanh »

Hello All,
I have (6) 800MHz analog Datatac DSS-III stations that I need to convert to voice repeaters to use with a Smartnet system.
The SCM's are all TTN4094B13; I have EPROMS in U651, 2, 3, 4 sockets; a SIMM slot but no board; Codeplug vers 13; station control firmware R016.07.026. The question is: CAN I USE THE SAME BOARDS & JUST ORDER NEW EPROMS or SIMM CARD? And if so, what will the part# be?
Any help at all will be GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Thanks,
deanh
(I have a good picture of the board if you want to see it - I didn't have a jpg to img converter)

You need to put Quantar Station Control & Wireline boards in them and you're good to go.

It will certainly be easiest to just get a known working SCM.

It's possible to change a data station to a voice station. You will need to find a firmware SIMM (not orderable thru Mot) and upgrade the firmware, then pull and toss the 4 DIP proms. You will most likely need to change the codeplug prom from a Xicor to an Atmel for any long term reliability.

The wireline board comes in 2 flavors. Upgradeable and junk. You can tell by looking at the 2 proms on the wireline board. If they are 27C010, you will need to replace them with 29C020 proms to be flash upgradeable.

FYI - A Quantar station refresh is $1200 (software only, no parts)... plus whatever time the shop charges.

Good Luck

I've found that most DSS-III stations don't even have a wireline card in them. You have to add it. I've also found it's much easier to just remove and shelf the DSS-III control board and put a Quantar SCM in it, a-la EPIC II, III, V, whatever.

I've got a station that started life as a DSS-III and is now a full-blown P25-equipped Quantar.
