EX600 XLS internal mic replacement

I have an EX600 XLS and the audio from the internal mic sounds like you are on a motorboat.

Tried it with a remote Speaker/Mic and the audio was crystal clear.

I took the radio to a local Motorola shop and asked that they replace the internal mic. They said that it could go to the depot for $300 or they could get a refirb kit for $420 (Because the mic element is in the front case and cannot be replaced separately).

Is that true? If not is there an internal mic assembly if yes a part number would be great. Any suggestions are welcome.

they are partially right but mostly wrong, you can get the mic separate like listed above but it is part of the front housing and comes with the housing kit but that kit I thought was around $50. if that's the case then it's worth it to get the housing kit and just make the radio look like new again at the same time. new mic, new speaker, new keypad, new flex connectors, new display glass

A housing kit is really expensive, as it comes with the display and the controller board/keypad board. They have to be ordered either vhf or uhf also. There is a refurb kit for abt 50 that has all the plastic parts, but none of the electrical parts, you need to transfer those over. If it looks good, I'd just order a mic element. If the case is trashed, I'd get the refurb kit too since you will have it all apart to change the mic. So they weren't totally ripping you off, just mostly, they probably didn't even look to see if they could get the mic element.
