We are currently having issues with broadcasting audio from our CDM1550 to three different speakers in different areas of our fire station. So our solution is to have a PA Amplifier hooked up to the unit to give it a little boost, only one problem. I'm dumb in the speaker wiring aspect of it.
For the inputs I have two RCA inputs (L/R) and for the outputs are the wire connectors with several different places to put them at. The outputs are: COM, 4 OHM, 8 OHM, 16 OH and 70V.
Does anyone know how I would go about wiring this up without incinerating our base radio? Thanks! lol
CDM1550 going to a PA Amplifier

Re: CDM1550 going to a PA Amplifier
OK, you are going to need to connect the CDM to the amp via the 16 pin option plug. You will want to have the CDM programmed for filtered audio and not flat audio. That output will connect to the RCA input of the amplifier. Now comes the tricky part. What speakers do you have??
Are they 70 volt speakers or are they just standard?
70 volt speakers will have a multitapped transformer connected to them that the amp connects to.
They operate different than standard speakers in that they don't load the amp the same and a number of them can be connected to the amp without burning it up.
Now that being said, if you have standard speakers all is not lost. You can connect them up in such a way that they will all work it's just a pain.
speakers connected in parallel divide load. SO 2 8 ohm speakers are a 4 ohm load wired in parallel. If 2 8 ohm speakers are wired in series, the share the load or create a 16 ohm load at the amp. series is ok. parallel, if you are using more than 2 can burn up the amp.
If you are NOT completely sure about all this, call a radio guy in and have it taken care of. The radio will need programmed anyway, just have them take care of the rest of it too.
