MCS2000 vs CDM1550 VHF front end sensitivity??

Post by g8tzl2004 »

I have a VHF MCS2000 which has excellent front end sensitivity - about 0.13uV for 12dB SINAD (125dBm) - which is much much better than the quoted spec figure of "better than " 0.3uV (117dBm).

I don't own a CDM1550 but I read the specs which provides both a "better than" figure of 0.3uV BUT also states a TYPICAL figure of 0.22uV (120dBm)

Does this mean that "in the real world" a VHF CDM1550 is deafer than an MCS2000?

Has anybody compared both radios?

What radios do you own?: AM/FM

Every MCS we ran had a hotter front end than every CDM we had in our fleet, some of them even more sensitive than the Spectras they replaced. I never put one on a service monitor, but we routinely had complaints from the people who used them that "something was wrong, I'm hearing people on our channel" while on-hook in our MCS-equipped units that the CDM folk plain'an simply never heard.

The specs are just that, minimum specs. I had a CP150 that would open up squelch at .077uV. It was very noisy but the 1khz tone was still noticeable. I don't think I'll ever find another portable that opens with so little signal. Had to check it on 2 other monitors to make sure my primary wasn't sending more signal than reported.

I guess the downside of "minimum specs" is that you can have 2 identical radios both within spec but one is super sensitive and the other deaf !! (125dBm - 117dBm = 8dB difference)

MCS2000's seem to be very consistant ie. all sensitive but Jedi portables seem to be the "luck of the draw" with some really deaf sets around but still within spec!!!
