I have 2 motorola portables that operate in the 800 mhz band. I want to use these radios but am not for sure about licensing frequencies. What services are available from the FCC in this band, and what are the pros and cons. I tried looking at the FCC website but got lost. Thanks for any help.

You can almost forget it. There are no private radio services in the 800 MHz band. The best you could hope for is to get your radios set up on an SMR (Specialized Mobile Radio) system on a per-month access fee, like businesses that need radio communications, and even that's kind of unlikely with a fleet of only two radios, plus nearly every SMR has been converted to Nextel/iDen.

Hello.

There are freqs for SMR, but remember there is a part of the band for ONLY conv' radio, this is due to the unique nature of the band, the "domestic public advanced mobile telephone system" is on more than half of the 806/890 MHz band, this was carved out of the UHF TV band, channels 70 to 83.
Near the US/Mexaco border, 800 has some large holes, this is because the 2 governments could not agree on somethings, so,,, 50000 watt TV transmitter EX276 was put on the air, can you say oops in spanish?.
The Mexican government does not allow Nextel, or anyone else, to transmit on freqs without full disclosure of ALL tecnical details, in the 800 MHz band near the BORDER.

Thank You.

Just curious, but how much does access to a SMR system cost per month?
