Quantar out of band??

Post by RADIOMAN2002 »

I see a lot of used 438-470 mhz Quantars for sale, I need to replace my 225 watt Micor 478/481 mhz repeater. Has anyone done this or knows if I can take the 438-470 unit up to 478 tx and 481 rx and will it work. Is it software locked and can the software be hacked like most of Motorola software, and how does the hardware work with being taken 10 mhz out of band. Are all Quantars able to do P-25 out of the box, or should I be looking for a specific model or add on card?
I also see that they are no longer available to order, and the replacement is the MTR3000, which runs about 6K, is that a good price??

8 & 11 MHz is too far out of band to expect proper operation.
Quantar RSS does not need to be hacked to program out of band. Just ignore the warnings.
Not all Quantars do P25. You need to check the firmware versions.
Quantar stations can be ordered through September 31, 2011.
As a Quantar replacement, MTR3000 is only suitable for analog applications.
For P25 applications, GTR8000 is the Quantar replacement. [$16K+]

What do I need to look for in firmware versions for P-25 and analog? I also would like wireline control, and I understand that requires a separate card, is that field installable? True the MTR3000 is analog and or MOTOTRBO, and I havn't decided which way to go yet P-25 or MOTOTRBO. The original new cost for my Micor was 22K (without a receiver no less, they wanted an addtional $1,800 for it), so 16k isn't to far out of line since it's 23 years later. I also saw a few stations without the PA amplifier, how much power does the exciter card put out, I might be able to just plug it into the Micor amp and save about 1K.

The MTR 3000 does indeed require a wireline card to use wireline control. It is field installable and plugs into a slot in the MTR 3000 just like the MTR 2000.

My best advice is to hold out until an R3 Quantar shows up that will do 478/481 (Where are you? That's an odd arrangement - out here it's 481RX 484TX) and go with that.

In NYC we have TV 14 and 15, excluding NYC exclusive use of TV 16. Normal splits are 470-472.999 RX 473-475.999 TX then 476-478.999 RX and 479.000 to 481.999TX. New Jersey and Suffolk and parts of Nassau county use TV 19 and 20 up to 520 mhz.
What about the exciter out put? Any ideas as to how much it puts out, the Micor PA can run anywhere from 250mw to 2 watts in for full rated power out.
