Kinda OT: NMO Mount GPS antenna w/ integrated USB Receiver??

Post by d119 »

I recall having seen at one time or another a vehicle that had an NMO mount GPS puck on it, but instead of coax coming out the interior portion, it had a USB cable and could directly interface to the laptop or MDT in the vehicle.

Getting ready to switch out an MW500 that has an integrated GPS with an ML900 that does not have the integrated GPS. I like the look and operation of the external GPS antenna and would like to replace it with something like I've described above, especially since there's already a hole in the vehicle for an NMO mount antenna.

Anyone know who makes this? Tried searching google for it, but didn't have any success.

The USGlobalSat MR-350P is roughly what you're looking for, but it's a 7/8" hole - not 3/4". I don't think you're going to find anything that actually uses a real NMO mount - just something with a 3/4" feed-through.

Do you really need to put the GPS outside? I have two trucks running USGlobalSat BU-353s (SiRF III chipset, direct USB connection) attached to a steel dash support under the dash "tray" present in 2009-2011 F150s. They both work very well and show sub-10-foot EPEs. Quite sufficient for AVL and mapping. The cable runs down the inside of the dash, then out into the console where it interfaces to a RAM USB Tough Hub.

There is another one out there that has up to 4? Antennas in it via puck style. I can remember the name for the life of me but can did it up later. Iirc you could have gps, wifi, cell and/or 800 data. Connecticut state uses it for cell/gps and I think wifi. Not the cheapest but seems to work well.

That isn't exactly what I'd seen in the past, but would certainly fit the bill so thank you for the heads up, Terry.

The unit I saw actually had a USB port in the tail of it, and you plugged the cable into it and then into the PC. I really wish I could remember where I saw that...

That isn't what I had in mind. The one I was recalling was a circular puck, and had a USB port in the tail.

BUT

That AntennaPlus unit would do the job just fine, and I've contacted them. Thanks all! Hopefully that thing uses an NMO size hole so it can replace the existing antenna...

That is the one we used.. It used a NMO hole and automotive grade adhesive pad. It had the USB on the end.

APG500 is the part number for the GPS only antenna, and at $300 each (quoted by them), they can keep it.
