CSS LAN IP Settings on Notebook to Connect to P25 Trunking

Post by Wadsworth »

I'm having trouble remembering how to set up my notebook computer to connect to a Motorola P25 bare bones trunking system. I am connecting with a LAN cable but cannot get the CSS software to connect. As an example, can someone tell me what would be typical for an IP address such as 10.101.2.20 for the site controller card and what my notebooks IP4 should typically be set to, such as 10.101.2.201 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 ? Doing this, I cannot get my LAN to connect so I can read a card.

When I said "site controller card" I was referring to one of the site control channel transceivers, not a controller itself.

If you want to connect to the site controller use the serial connection in CSS and plug in to the serial port on the controller to see what the IP address is. If the controller is in service you need to set your computer to dhcp and plug into the switch and let the zone controller assign you an IP address. From there you should be able to enter the IP address of the controller in the CSS and go from there. If the controller is out of the network you need to set your computer to a static IP.

First you need to connect to the switch and open a port, then you will get an ip from the switch for your laptop. If your not familiar with how to do so, go find someone from you system to help you like your ST or FTR guys. In any recent system you do not assign your laptop a static ip, thats asking for a conflict.

Not all systems have a closed switch so I would first try plugging into a port to see if the system can assign you an IP address before you change any settings in the switch. Although its not difficult to open ports on the switch if needed. This can be done by connecting to the serial port on the back of the switch. And as mentioned don't set your computer to a static IP and plug into the network, you can create a mess. You do need to set your computer to a static IP if the unit is not in the network.
