FUSE BLOCKS - HELP - UPDATED

I'm trying to locate some high amp fuse blocks. Not having much luck.

I have a 2 9 position fuse blocks on my mounting tray right now. One is constant 12v the other is iginition switched. The blocks are rated for 40amps max per circuit. I plan to use these for low current stuff, map lights, laptop charger, flashlight charger, APRS TNC etc etc.

What I need is high amp draw blocks for the spectras, orions and emergency equipment.

I suppose I could just order the high amp fuse holders from Motorola but I'd prefer a block type system.

Tessco has stuff that is meant for glass fuses with clear plastic covers - but it just looks hokey.

Can't seem to find much else out there.

I need something with at least 4 fuse positions 40amps per side or better.

Most of the stuff I'm finding is meant for high power stereo installations (BLECH)

Federal signal 23 outlet 430 amp system. I'm removing the crappy buss fuse panels once I get this. Time to try something better at least for all the lower current stuff. I've decided to use 4 heavy duty 40 amp fuze holders for the big amp draw stuff. Its simpler than dealing with the stereo stuff.

Hey, The standard BUSS cheesy plastic fuse panel from tessco is really crappy, but they work and I know alot of people use them......If you want some really nice heavy duty, high current stuff (i hate to say it) but the car stereo stuff works very well. Scosche, stinger, and amp make some nice stuff and its all available from local stereo shops in many different variations.

Here is a very cool local shop (to me) that has a great selection and will ship....

Car stereo pieces are great to use, but if the specs for the installation call for SAE rating, most stereo pieces aren't... even though much of it is VERY high quality. I use AGO type from Parts Express' car stereo line.

TST/Del City have blocks that hold up to (I think) 8 ATO style plastic blade type fuses. These can even be had with a ground junction, although a trip to Home Depot's electrical section always gives a nicer ground bar that's from the inside of a breaker panel. (Square-D for anyone that needs to know!) You can get them in any size and they'll bolt nicely to the chassis, body or console.

I aleady have 2 of the TST fuse panels -I've got one of their 300 amp switched breakers on order.

I am looking for something higher amperage in a fuse panel.

The one tht Parts Express has holds 4 fuses up to 60A each for 240 amp total. I wouldn't run it above 175, however.

Has anybody else thought about an OEM fuse block from an auto recycling yard? I put one in a Bronco II when I had a Syntor and other gear. I ran 8 ga to it and mounted it in the rear. Worked well as an aux power source.

I have open space in the interior of my explorer and I always thought it'd be cool to have a small breaker box mounted to power everything. I'll have to look into it again. Last time i couldn't find anything to fit (physical size wise) into a standard box.

Go to the Parts Express page and search "fuse block"

A whole page of stuff comes up...some of it looks good.

The colhersee folks have nice stuff - quite a staple in the fire truck industry - but from what I could see the distribution blocks appear to be very old fashioned even still using bakelite!

I'll look at parts express again, although most of it was the stereo stuff

Sunwize has some nice looking ATO/ATC type fuse blocks, including ground bus.. 100A per block, 30A per circuit.

Another nice alternative is the old tried and true (dont flame me) GE mobile radio fuse box. holds a 15 or 20 amp fuse.

For years we would use one of these for each radio and another one for the accessory stuff.

never had a failure, and they were well protected.

A (M) salesman once told me they would not work with Motorola gear... (!!!!)

wonder where he is these days?

Ok I bought the Federal Signal / Unitrol power distribution board. Its a very high quality product like anything unitrol made, but its meant for lighting control and not power distribution!

I fact I swear its the power board out of a unitrol Omega 90 remote siren/light controller or toughmaster Delta.

Really a nice product with high current relays on board plus a momentary timer.

What I wanted was a bunch of constant 12v and then ignition switched 12v terminations which this device.... but because of how the board is laid it won't do that.

arg! still can't find what I want.

Well, it's from FedSig, so it can't be that bad. Just since it's sold by Gall's, it just costs wayyy too much. Galls marks their stuff up too much since they know that most people just default to them.
