black box type GPS

Post by apco25 »

who makes a dedicated GPS receiver with external antenna input and serial output that isn't based around a vehicle, ship or handheld model? I.e black box to serve as a GPS for a laptop.

Only stuff I can find would be either serial or USB based and have no provision for vehicle antenna.

Most of the ones I've seen put the whole thing in the antenna so you only have to run a small cable, no coax.

I think there was somthing out there like this, but I haven't seen one in a long time. It was for use on a boat with DPS systems and run on 12 volt. I'll long around.

Try Garmin.. I have a GPS25 OEM module, which has a serial output via a TAPR interface card, and an external antenna connection. It would fit in
an Altoids tin if the tin was slightly thicker..

They also have the GPS18 (available q1 2004), which is a hocky puck
antenna/receiver with rs232 (DE9), USB, or bare wire serial outputs.
NMEA format for the rs232 and bare wire versions, garmin format for USB.

Take a look at what Delorme offers in the GPS package that goes with their Street Atlas and other maping programs. The combination will show you just where you are on the map as you travel around. It was made to work with laptops and use the serial port.

I have this @road GPS reciever..... It is supposed to hook up to the internet for fleet tracking. Looks like it has standard serial output and hooks into a small MDT terminal that came with it. I was thinking of terminating the internet antenna and using it for APRS.

I tried to bid on this auction but wasn't able to. If anyone has one of these units and would like to get rid of it, please let me know.

Check out the Digitraveler (or something like that) from Radio Shack. They have the Sony chipset inside and are on closeout at $29.00! They will plug right in to a Kenwood TH-D7 for APRS.

That /\/\ GPS on eBay looks just like my Trimble. Must be an OEM.

um just to clarify

I want a stand alone GPS unit that does nothing but ouput the GPS data via serial port that also accepts an external antenna. That's it.

I am NOT looking for any of the self contained antenna puc type units that are on the market now.

I have a real GPS antenna on my roof.

I'll look at the garmin units - otherwise I'll keep using my GPS III+ since it has a BNC connector on it. I'd j ust like to return that to being the portable GPS unit instead of feeding the PDRC with it.

The Trimble(sp) units work great. I use one in one of my trackers. It's awesome, small, and does exactly what you want.

As a general matter, stay away from Trimble and also from OEM units (such as those marketed by DeLorme). Trimble has a bad record of orphaning units and leaving users in the lurch; OEM stuff cannot be maintained. Far and away the best source of GPS equipment is Garmin for most applications, and Northstar for high end specialty applications.
