You are correct - Advanced Digital Privacy is the name for the new software encryption.

Sales was told that this would be available for 9600 systems only and that the target price per radio would be $350.00

I haven't seen how close the actual price comes to the target.

According to the help file in the XTS5000/2500 CPS:

"ADP is software-based encryption that provides voice encryption on digital personalities."

"There must be eight or fewer Secure Multikey records in order to select “ADP” as the Secure Type. "

"Once “ADP” is selected, eight is then the default number for records and none can be added or deleted."

"Depending on the radio’s mode/options, “ADP” or “Hardware” Secure Type may be predetermined and are therefore view-only."

Does anyone know how secure ADP is versus using hardware (DES-OFB) encryption?

I doubt they'll be doing this, but any idea if it'll have support for the Astro Saber and the XTS3000 in teh future?

For the XTL5000, ADP is option G113, and is $349 list.

ADP with DES/DES-XL/DES-OFB, is option G194 and it lists at $799.

Both of these options came out in Dec 2003, with 6.3 S.R.

There is no mention of a requirement for 9600 for either one of these options.

I'm not too familiar with software encryption, but, is a keyloader still required if you have this as an option, or do you enter the key via RSS/CPS and/or the keypad?

Seems to me this is an inexpensive (and no doubt, insecure) way of using encryption to keep away the people with the Digital Scanners.

Motorola has continued to enhance their Project 25 system offerings with Type I encryption for federal applications, Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and Trunked Over-the-Air- Re-Keying (OTAR). The OTAR functionality allows security keys to be changed over the air, eliminating the need to bring radio units back in-house for re-keying. Advanced Digital Privacy (ADP) encryption for 9600 bps systems will also be introduced in 2003.

The old software encryption that worked with VSELP had it's keys loaded via the CPS.

Might be the wrong forum, but I'll ask here and keep looking...

My question /was/ Doesn't the XTS5000R radio have encryption native ("built in" or standard) ? I mean for 5 grand, what DOES this radio do so special?

It looks by reading the above that it doesn't. So I need to see about adding it to current and future units, both portable, mobile, and base.
What will be best and cheapest? The ADP for ~350.00 per radio?

We are EMS and need to get some sort of secure comms going and I'm thinking of leaning towards encryption.

(yes, I know all about using landline, cell, digital cell, etc. AND the fact that we really DONT NEED it to be encrypted, but I think that this will be the best solution dealing with the "minds" that I am dealing with.)

As far as hardware over software, I would agree with you, we will need to look at what might be compatable with other radios. We (the hospital) will have NO control over what is purchsed later by the city.
Keyloaders are already available. The PD is on encryption already (don't know which type, and cant' ask, but I think it's the Mil version or public version of the singcars (sp)

Since it's looking pretty expensive at this point, I'm already backing away unfortunately. Heck, the 5000's areen't even ours, they are on a "permanent loan"

We were not consulted in this (dumba**) decision to go digital, just expected to comply. that issue was forced for a short time when , without warning, and before the 5000's had been given to us, the fire chief issued the directive to stop toning us out on our channel and begin using the 800 system and it's dedicated alerting channel. Then to not even talk to us on our channel (vhf)
Again, this was without warning to us, and without us even having ANY of the new 800 radios!!! That's the mentality I'm dealing with here. (phone call - Hello Dispatch, WTF? Over...) (Oh, he said we can't talk to you...)

As far as WHAT is being transmitted, the info that needs to be protected is
"Jane Smit, 5/15/53 Social of 525-48-7829" we can just say the rest of it with no problems. The analog cellphones are being phased out as you know, and a digital cellphone can't talk from inside the box (back of the ambulance) and even in a "kar Kit" you are then stuck with Hands-Free, no one makes a kit with a handset anymore. And Hands-free in the back of a moving ambulance is like a speakerphone in a jet engine.
Im are in a quandry.
