I dont know much about the systems saber series. I want to upgrade from a regular old secure saber to a systems saber and want to know how you guys feel and need some general info.

1 Can I still use the same secure modual?

2 Can I use the same C DES only keyloader for the DES modual in the system saber.

3 Does anyone hate the system saber or do you love it and why.

3. Lub it 16 channels trunked or conventional + scan and mode names will display in a convertacom with display mic.

The Systems Saber is a different radio, with different programming algorithm, different menus and different display contents. The SSIIIs that I am familiar with do 255 channels in 16 zones of 16. A separate scan list for each channel, and scan can be invoked from a single key (rather than from a menu, as on the Saber). Downsides are only that they don't do 12.5 kHz channels, they do not remember scan state on power-up, and there is a limitation on the use of the higher DPLs. They also require a different RSS than the Sabers.

Both TX and RX audio on the Systems Saber is better than I've encountered in any other M portable.

I own a few Systems Saber III's. Yes, you can use your secure module, your KVL and cable, your programming cable, and your accessories from your Saber with a Systems Saber.

The RSS is different and it takes some getting used to.
The radio will do trunking or conventional.
ALL systems sabers are securenet capable.
On a SS2 or SS3, you get 16 zones of 16 modes each.
Your RAT buttons can be programmed to do a BUNCH of different things.

And they're right above... The audio is supurb. If you like Sabers, you'll LOVE Systems Sabers.

Another nice feature of the Systems Sabers is that you can program one of the side buttons or the top switch for talk around. Then you can instantly use the repeater or talk direct.

You can also program many of the keypad buttons for talkaround. If you're going to be running securenet, I recommend leaving the TMSS set to coded/clear operation.

I use my two RAT buttons for two different "hey, this is important" tones, my TMSS for coded/clear and I have the "9" keypad button set for talkaround/repeater.

There is one glitch in the SSaber "talkaround" feature: it grabs only the Rx freq, assuming that the Tx and Rx tones are the same. This is OK for systems that use the same tone format and value in both directions; but for systems with split tones or formats, you have to program a separate channel slot for "direct."

When the monitor button is depressed and held on my friend's SS3 it beeps after a few seconds. Mine does not. What does this indicate?

Specifically, will I be able to utilize MDC decode and QCII?

On the regular Saber the beep indicates that the Core version is 6D or 8D. I don't know about the SS. Maybe it has something to do with the Con version?

Sounds like it indicates that the radio is in permenant monitor mode.

Do you mean mdc squelch or caller id? The systems saber does not do caller id. However it has mdc features out the ass.

This is good news! I have not determined the CON version yet (no RSS) and I remembered something vague about how the presence of the 'beep' indicated a later CON version.

Well, I certainly can't wait to program up some MDC options and hopefully QC II as well. Thanks for the info guys.
