Encryption module disappeared! Weird CPS problem?

Encryption module disappeared! Weird CPS problem?

Post by wavetar »

Here's a bit of a head scratcher. Received a brand new XTS3000 Model III today. First thing I do is test mode, to see if I can add to r0f's Host/DSP listing. So, it also shows the "EMC R03.56", "KG1 DES-OFB", "KG2 DES-XL", "KG3 None" info. That's fine, I already knew it had an encryption module in it.
So, afterwards I use CPS 3.0 to drag & drop the customer's info from a 2-year old DOS archive into the new radio. Radio accepts the programming, but gives me "error 09/10"! This normally means the programming is set for secure and the radio doesn't have an encryption module in it. Thing is, I know it does indeed have one! So, check test mode again....and now there's no EMC info at all! It's as if the secure module was taken out.
I place a quick call to Motorola dealer support & they tell me what I already know...that the codeplug has nothing to do with the encryption module. No :o Sherlock. They are at a loss to explain why this is happening as well.
I subsequently read the radio directly, disable secure & write to the radio. I no longer get the "error 09/10", but still no EMC info in test mode. Read the radio again, re-enable secure & write to the radio once more....no "error 09/10"!! Test mode now shows the EMC info once again! My head now hurts.

Tracing my steps afterwards, the RSS person at Motorola points out that I read the DOS archive with the CPS, but I'm apparently supposed to save it in CPS format first, before I start dragging & dropping the info. That's the only thing we can think of that caused the issue...but I'm not about to try it again to confirm it! Anyone else ever see that?

Nope, the DOS codeplug had "secure" enabled, although I didn't drag that particular feature over. The "secure" was already enabled in the new radio, I just enabled "infinite key retention" to match what the older radios had, then wrote to the new radio. So, I know for a fact it was enabled...that's why I got the "error 09/10" upon initial programming.

Besides, no codeplug should make the radio think it doesn't have a ECM in it in test mode....even jamming a codeplug in with LAB wouldn't do that. It's a mystery to me. I'm just glad it fixed itself.

With MCS2000 radios being migrated from RSS to CPS, I have gotten into the habit of (i) reading the radio with RSS and archiving the file, (ii) using the "codeplug conversion" utility that came with the CPS, and (iii) reading the converted file with CPS and then writing it to the radio.

I suspect that M has already discovered that simply reading an RSS-programmed radio with the CPS does not always convert properly, hence the separate utility. Just a guess, but thus far we have avoided problems of the sort you've described.

Thank you good sir, I checked it & you are correct. I don't play with encryption much, and just assumed the test mode would show the presence of the ECM regardless of the programming. It now makes much more sense, although the CPS still caused the radio to think it didn't have an ECM upon initial programming, giving the 'error 09/10'. Probably something to do with the RSS/CPS conversion. Thanks guys, my head hurts less now.
