700 megahertz?

Just heard my agency is planning to go to 700 megahertz in the next five years. Has any one had a similar experience lately?
I seam to recall a nationwide push to do this.
I haven’t heard what mode or any other details.

Its a new band that was awarded to PS in addition to their current spectrum allocations. Currently the States are sending their Region plans to the FCC and to date none have been approved, but 5 yrs is still a long time away for you.

If you have any TV stations inbetween 64 and 69 they have to re-locate and that is the biggest holdup in the 700 MHz buildout and APCO 25 is the standard for the allocated spectrum for narrowband communications. There are also channels alocated for wideband (>100 khz) communications, but there is no standard for that.

New York Sate Police has a buildout plan for 700mhz, along with most N.Y. State agencies. 5 years ago, my Guard unit was told we were going to it also. At that time I wasn't aware of any manufacturers making 700mhz radios. Ive heard the reason for 700 mhz is to get away from NEXTHELL'S interference, we experience it even on 450mhz.
I would suspect it going to take about 30 years for completion. They are going to have a hard time making it work in the Adirondacks,(mainly all the tree huggers, preventing any towers within the Adirondack Park, thats why there is no cell service in that area), as well as around mid -state with all the mountains. Supposedly there are some testing sites operationg in the N.Y.C. area now. Havn't bothered to look yet.

The city of Independence, MO just got a "Holy cow that's a lot of money!!" grant to purchase and put into service a 700 MHz system. Haven't heard how it's coming along, but I'll let you know as it progresses.

I hear our job is tied into a Homeland Security grant.
We are moving our court security to 800 now and moving them to 700 after the county changes over.
The radios I see from Motorola look like they are set up for this by being wide band 700 and 800.

NY State is still in the bidding process for equipment with the Statewide Wireless Plan. Basically they have been almost going county by county for support and informational meetings. It seems so far that M/A-Com may be the supplier for the equipment. At least according to the Motorola Rep that was at our office who stated that they did not receive the contract and believed M/A-Com did.

There are a lot of kinks that need to be worked out in that system statewide. The Adirondaks are one of them. I beleive Canadian Television is another... Also the Catskill area is going to be hard pressed for towers for decent coverage due to the same reasons as you said with the Adirondaks.

In my opinion.. I think the state will either abandon the project OR put it up with the least amount of resistance and only make DOT and/or the State Police use it.

The system in NYC may be the EDACS systems that Troop NYC uses. I know someone down there (who is a member of the board FWIW) who uses that system and says that it is a great system. But I'll let him tell the stories if he so choses....

I am aware of the 800 EDACS sytem that been up for quite a few years. Mainy special OPS and details around the city, but this is and experimantal system that was put in to test 700 mhz. All this info came from my Guard unit, when they asked me for an opinion on it.
