Non keypad/A4/A5 unit to unit calling question

Post by Pj »

If you have a II model portable, or a W4/W5 control head, how can one call another unit not on the prestored call list (MDC and trunking)?

A local ASTRO Smartzone system seems to work this way. Mobiles are W4 and portables are XTS3000 Mod 2's. I have only had W7/W9 mobiles and III model radios. I can't think how at the moment..

Any quick hints?

I must be missing the question, because I would have thought the answer was simple: you can't. We use "Call Alert" on a couple of systems, and the non-keypad radios limit the choice to "List Only."

That's what I thought. Apparently with ConnSP's new radio system, scanner users on a list are reporting that private calls are on the rise, but 99% of the radio's on the system are W4's and XTS Mod 2's.

My guess is troop to car kind of thing, but I don't have a scanner, so I don't know for sure.

Is there a way for network center to place two units in EPC, but not by dynamically regrouping them?

My guess would be that those calls are going either to the barracks desk or the shift commander. I am not aware of a console command that would link two (or more) explicit units for what amounts to a new group channel request absent DYN. But then, I don't know anything about what CTSP is using.
