NO audio.. New S-Record & radio smoked *literally*

Post by ssybert »

Hey guys,

A while back I switched out my W7 for a W3. I used the same, radio, but got an S-record from a W3 radio, replaced the front panel and got a HHCH for it. I haven't touched it in months. The control cable I got for the HHCH turned out to be for an analog spectra to SIU or something. Bottom line is it was the wrong cable. I didn't know this until AFTER I burned something up inside the radio. plugging the control cable into the DB25 cabled CONTROL HEAD on the faceplate didn't work. Plugging it into the OTHER DB25 made the radio smoke. Trying the head directly into the radio in EITHER SLOT worked fine. I dont know what smoked but since everything SEEMED to work.

After leaving the project on hold for over a month, I finally got back to it. I installed the radio WITHOUT the control cable. once installed I discovered the radio acrtually is NOT working properly. When I transmit, my audio is REAL LOW into a scanner and appears to NOT be transmitting a PL. There also seems to be some consistant noise on the channel along with my LOW audio. I'm not sure if it's just the scanner being REAL LOUD or something else. I'm pretty confident it's not sending a PL or sending it strong enoungh?

My question here is... Do you think the S-record could have contained some specific pot values I need to re-adjust or did this happen from when the radio smoked? If you think it did happen from when the radio smoked, what board should I replace? i've got a doner analog spectra here with everything except the W3 front panel and the vocon.

Lastly, I did make sure it was tuned. That was my first guess.. Dead on.

any ideas? if not, I'll just start swapping boards tongiht. Hope someone may have some clue.

Thanks, Scott,.

What radios do you own?: Disney FRS

Probably NOT the srecord. The srecord contains softpot values that will only affect transmit and receive, plus what's displayed and how it "sees you."

I've heard of people locking their radios up with srecords and not being able to talk to them again VIA RSS, but nothing that smokes hardware.

The S-record of course affects all of the pot settings in the service alignment screens. I am confused since you 'made sure the radio was tuned', yet ask about the softpots. Have you actually gone into the screens & tried to align the radio using a proper service monitor? If so, and you cannot get the radio to transmit PL, and have low audio, then you definitely created a problem by plugging in the wrong cable. Look closely at both sides of the command board. Often, it may be an internal trace which has burnt, as opposed to a component. You can usually see where the board has 'bubbled', and a black oily looking residue might be seen as well. It seems like a candidate for a board replacement to me.

After some troubleshooting, I've come to the conclusion that it's the VOCON. I've swapped Vocon's and pushed in a new S-record file and the radio worked fine. Great.

Christ. Now I need a new vocon. wtf.
